Stuart Cardwell was interested in things mechanical from an early age having dismantled
the family clock aged 8, replaced the brakes and gears on his bicycle at 10 and assembled
his own bike from bits aged 12, later progressing to swapping engines and gearboxes
on cars. He embarked on a career in engineering at 18 and was sponsored through university
by Lucas Girling. He graduated in 1977 from Salford University with a 2.1 honours
degree in mechanical engineering (with final year design specialisation) and completed
a graduate apprenticeship whilst working for Lucas Girling before taking up a position
in their Patents Department specialising in automotive disc brake technology. He
went on to qualify as a Chartered Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney in
private practice and has over 25 years' experience in the patent profession, 17 years
of which were as a partner in one of the largest firms of UK Patent Attorneys.
25 years in private practice has provided Stuart with a wealth of experience in a
vast range of mechanical technologies as well as related trade mark experience acting
for private individuals, SME's, national and multinational companies. Notable clients
in the automobile field include Volkswagen, Bosch and Hyundai. Other areas of experience
include apparatus for use in medical diagnosis, agricultural machines, aeration technology,
door and window design and security, packaging and packaging machines, load handling
technology, pharmaceutical machines, and cable reel technology .
Stuart's background in engineering enables him to interact easily with inventors
at all levels and to quickly grasp new concepts and assess the best way of securing
protection.
Stuart has a keen interest in classic cars and lists his other interests as fell
walking, photography, and architecture. He is married with two children.
